Gary Warner, UAB's Director of Research in Computer Forensics, has been named by BankInfo Security as one of the Top 10 influencers in banking information security. Warner is regarded as an expert in phishing attacks and international cybersecurity fraud. Along with directing the UAB Computer Forensics Research Laboratory, Warner is co-founder and chief technologist for Malcovery Security.

James H. Rimmer, Ph.D., director of the Lakeshore Foundation/UAB Research Collaborative, received the award given annually by the Association of Academic Physiatrists to the lead author of the best paper published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “This is the first randomized controlled trial that demonstrated people with physical disabilities can make small, effective improvements in self-managing their health,” Rimmer said.

UAB has named Bill Clark as the Blazers' new head football coach, replacing Garrick McGee. Clark guided the Jacksonville State Gamecocks to a record-setting 11-4 2013 season in his first year as head coach. More information about the announcement is online.

James Allen Pittman Jr., M.D., who began his career here as a medical resident in 1956 and came to be considered a principal architect of the School of Medicine, passed away Jan. 12.  "He is one of the great people who, through his unwavering dedication, helped propel UAB’s growth into an institution that can and does change the world for the better,” said UAB President Ray Watts, M.D.

Professor Arline Savage, Ph.D., has been appointed chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance in the Collat School of Business. Savage, who directs the Master of Accounting program, will begin her duties in August. “Accounting is the third largest undergraduate program at UAB, and we have a strong tradition of producing exceptional accounting and finance students. I expect we’ll continue to lead the way under Dr. Savage’s leadership,” said Dean Eric Jack, Ph.D.

This week, polar research scientist and biology Professor Charles Amsler, Ph.D., did something no other UAB professor has done: He took a selfie at the South Pole.
Amsler, who is co-director of UAB's research in Antarctica, also has been manager for the Antarctic organisms and ecosystems program at the National Science Foundation since June 2013. He is in Antarctica reviewing research support facilities and science programs under his management at NSF.
