This summer, more faculty than ever took part in the Red Mountain Project, a UAB Sustainability initiative demonstrating how to incorporate the topic into new or existing courses. Students want to know more about sustainability, participants say, and their cohort offered “a base of people to connect with and brainstorm ideas.”

Salt boosts blood pressure for some people. UAB study asks: Who?
By alternating high-salt and low-salt diets, a new clinical trial aims to find out how common salt sensitivity of blood pressure is in the general population. The researchers are also exploring whether the immune system plays a role.

Help us find out by joining our study at UAB You may be eligible to participate in the PRECISION-BP research study about the effects of Sacubitril/Valsartan or Valsartan on your body’s 24-hour rhythm of a hormone in your blood called natriuretic peptides. This hormone and the study medications are related to the heart. Eligible participants must be obese (BMI: 30-45 kg/m2) men and women, have high blood pressure, and have no history of heart or kidney problems. The study involves wearing a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, 24-hour inpatient visits at UAB hospital, taking medications, and collecting blood and urine samples. Meals will be provided at no cost. Participants will be compensated $575 for completing the study visits. The Kids Low Vision and Reading (KLoVR) study aims to better understand reading ability among children with permanent vision impairment.
The Kids Low Vision and Reading (KLoVR) study aims to better understand reading ability among children with permanent vision impairment. We need to recruit children ages 6 to 16 with normal vision (glasses are ok) for a comparison group. Testing includes vision testing, reading tests and memory tests and lasts 2 to 2.5 hours. No eyedrops are used. Participants are compensated with a $100 gift card and free parking in the Callahan Eye Hospital parking deck. Are you currently pregnant and planning to breast feed?
If you are currently pregnant, 18 or older, planning to deliver at UAB, and planning to breast feed, you may be eligible for our study. This study focuses on better understanding CMV, a common virus most people in the US are infected with by adulthood, its transmission through breast milk from mother to baby, and how the body protects itself from the virus. Participants will meet with study staff once a month for six months to collect non-invasive samples and answer a questionnaire. Samples collected include oral swabs from you and your baby, a small quantity of breast milk and a skin swab from you, and a urine and stool sample from your baby. Participants will be compensated up to $300 for completing the study visits and providing samples. Eligible participants may also qualify for additional sub-studies for additional compensation up to $800. Do you wish there were another prolapse treatment option?
We are looking for current pessary users to trial a new investigational pessary, which may be more comfortable and easier to use than your current pessary. Participate in nationwide study to understand why some people have prolonged symptoms (referred to as long COVID or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, also called PASC) or develop new or returning symptoms after the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We need COVID-19 survivors from the Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, areas.
