UAB to dedicate Habitat House on Veteran’s Day

Toni Byrd STREAMAn American veteran is the beneficiary of a new home built by Habitat for Humanity through the generosity of UAB employees.

This year's house — the third sponsored by UAB Benevolent Fund — was built for U.S. Navy veteran Toni Byrd and her daughter Sydney. The dedication for the three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,300-square-foot house at 1009 Trilby Street in Birmingham, will begin 9 a.m. Nov. 11, Veteran's Day. All are welcome.

Byrd has been appreciative of the time, effort and funds donated on her family’s behalf.

“Our own home will provide us with better living conditions, we can put the thousands in rental payments into something we can say is ours and help put something away for a rainy day, Byrd said. “We could not have received this opportunity without your generosity.”

That generosity comprises the combined efforts on a total of 656 volunteers providing 2,983 hours of labor, plus the monetary donations received from employees through the UAB Benevolent Fund, according to program coordinator Meg Feltham. Plans for the 2017 house are already underway with the “Home for the Holidays” fundraiser, encouraging employees to make donations in honor of their co-workers. As a special treat, supervisors who donate $5 per employee by Dec. 12 will receive a platter of decorated cookies for their office.
