UAB Employee Wellness will cut the ribbon on a newly revamped system of walking trails throughout the medical and academic campus to mark the occasion, and UAB Health System CEO Will Ferniany, Ph.D., will deliver brief remarks 9:30 a.m in the North Pavilion Atrium. Paper copies of the trail maps will be provided, and printable maps and detailed walking directions and more is online at uab.edu/walk.

Employees who walk the trail and scan the QR code posted along the trail route between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. April 26 will be entered for a chance to win a Fitbit.

“One of the greatest barriers to exercising regularly is time,” said Employee Wellness Director Anna Threadcraft. “Setting aside time to walk at lunch on April 26 is a good reminder that exercise doesn’t have to take place at a gym.”

The new UAB walking trail system gives steppers six routes from which to choose — a one-mile and a one-third mile walk beginning and ending on the campus Green, indoor and outdoor tracks around UAB Hospital and trails convenient to the UAB Highlands and UAB Avondale campuses.

The trails offer a simple way to fit a little exercise into a busy schedule, Threadcraft says. “Staying active during the work week is as easy as throwing on your sneakers during your lunch break.”

The trails are being unveiled during the 11th annual National Walk@Lunch Day, created by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to encourage people of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles to make walking a healthy habit for life. This past year, more than 14,000 people around Alabama took part in the nationwide event.
