      The Lifeguarding course is designed to teach skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in water up to 5 feet deep. An option to bridge to deep water lifeguarding will be offered at a later date. Participants must successfully pass a pre-course swim exam, skills check, and written exams with 80% or better score to obtain certification (valid for 2 years from the date of last scheduled class.)

      The blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill session) requires completion of 7 hours of online learning throughout the class. The instructor led sessions will total approximately 20 hours.

      Prerequisites

      • Be at least 15 years of age on the last scheduled day of class.
      • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Course prior to the pre-course skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report
      • 100 yard continuous swim
      • Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs
      • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds: swim 20 yards, dive to 4 foot depth, retrieve a 10 lb. brick, and swim it back to the starting point

      The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.

      Lifeguard Instructor Course Fact Sheet


      Prerequisites

      • Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
      • Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
      • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course (approximately 2 hours) prior to the pre-course skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report
      • Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course. Materials consist of:
        • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual (print)
        • Lifeguarding course presentation
        • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual (print or digital).

      To participate in the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer review course, the individual must possess and provide proof of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED instructor or instructor trainer certificate (Instructors or instructor trainers whose certification was withdrawn for any reason are not eligible to participate in the instructor review course).

    • Recertification: American Red Cross Lifeguarding

      The purpose of a review course is to give individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal course setting. The review course format optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. Participants must successfully pass a pre-course swim exam, skills check, and written exams with 80% or better score to obtain certification (valid for 2 years from the date of last scheduled class.) The responsibility for preparing for the final written exam is shared by the instructor and the participant.

    • CPR/AED/FIRST AID for the Professional Rescuer (Blended)

      American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program trains professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants will learn proper use of a resuscitation mask, a bag-valve mask, AED as well has how to perform two-person CPR.

      The updated blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats requires a 3 hour online learning section which must be completed 2 days prior to the scheduled date of class. Classroom portion is a 2 hour review and hands on skill based session. Certification is valid for 2 years from date of class.

      The challenge course provides a skills test and test out option for those who have a current or recently expired (less than 30 days) certification. Upon successful completion of the review course, the participant receives a certificate that is valid for 2 years from date of completion of the review course Blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats requires a 3 hour online learning section which must be completed prior to the scheduled date of class. Classroom portion is a 1 hour, hands on skill based session. Certification is valid for 2 years from date of class.

      This class is for foster and adoptive parents. Participants will receive training in water safety, first aid and CPR. This course is designed to teach participants how to recognize, prevent and respond to emergencies in, on or around the water. Additionally, this course is designed teach participants to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Participants will learn skills needed to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

      This 5-day, blended learning course will teach you everything you need to know to successfully manage medical emergencies in wilderness and remote settings. You will learn the following specialized problems:

      Extended Patient Management - Situations when many hours or days stand between the injured person and definitive hospital care.

      Extreme Environments - Heat, cold, altitude, and other environmental factors that pose a significant threat to the safety of patients.

      Limited Resources, Equipment, and Personnel - Learn to successfully improvise with available equipment to create tools such as splints or litters for the safe evacuation of patients.

    • Wilderness First Responder Re-certification

      This Open Re-certification course is open to graduates of any wilderness-based first aid training course that was at least 64 hours long and completed within 3 years of the proposed recertification option. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates’ Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT with this course.

    • National Academy of Sports Medicine

      Personal Trainer Certification Course

      UAB University Recreation has partnered with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) to provide a preparation course for one of the top, nationally recognized Personal Training Certifications. In this course you will meet twice per week for a book review and practical, hands-on experience. The registration fee includes the NASM Essentials of Personal Fitness Training textbook, chapter-by-chapter online courses, quizzes and reviews for each chapter, a NASM CPT pre-test, a NASM CPT practice exam, and the NASM Certified Personal Trainer exam. The course will run from Tuesday, September 17, through Thursday, November 21, and will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30p.
