The UAB University Recreation Center is the largest student employer on campus! We receive and review hundreds of applications every year. Before you can join us on our journey to enhance lifestyle of healthy leaving for the UAB community and beyond, you need to complete the following items:

- Complete Online Bloodbourne Pathogen Training
- Complete Online Protection of Children Training
- Complete Online PCI Compliance Training (Membership Attendants and Rental Center Attendants Only)
- Set up your SUB IT UP account
- Complete your Area Specific Training
- Set up for Direct Deposit
Please note that you will not work any shifts until steps 1-7 are completed in full. The onboarding process is extensive, so we have broken everything down for you.
IMPORTANT – Make sure you read thoroughly each of the steps as delaying of any of the steps might delay your start!

In order to complete the first step of the hiring process, please follow the appropriate directions based on your origin background:
Domestic Students
At this point, you should have met with your Area Supervisor for the Initial New Hire Paperwork. The rest of the onboarding process for domestic students is a 2-step process and is extremely time sensitive. Please complete the steps below in a timely manner. Not doing so can result in a later start date than originally discussed.
Step 1:
Within 1-2 business days of the Initial New Hire Paperwork being completed, you will receive an email from Malee GallowayThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . This email will have a link for you to follow to complete the first part of your I9 form. If you have not received the email within 3 business days please email your Area Supervisor for follow up.
Step 2:
Once you completed step one, please schedule an appointment with Malee to complete the second part of your I9. Malee's office is located in Room 307 of the Hill Student Center.
What to bring to your meeting with Malee Galloway:- Bring 2 ORIGINAL forms of ID. The most common are your Birth Certificate and Driver’s License; however, if you have a Passport, that is all you need. Please click HERE to see all acceptable forms of ID.
- If original IDs are not in your possession, please email your Area Supervisor to arrange for an altered start date. Please understand that this will delay your start date.
- If you are unable to complete the New Hire process on or before your Official Start date, your employment process will be terminated. (per UAB’s HR policy).
International Students
To start your New Hire Paperwork, you will need to contact Jessica Klotz

What to bring to your meeting with Jessica Klotz:- Passport
- I-20
- If you have your Social Security Card, please be sure to bring it with you as well. If you do not have a Social Security Card, we will help you to apply for one.

Prior to your start date, you will need to get your work uniform and your name tag.
Where: Jessica Klotz’s office 220R in the Rec Center during normal workday hours. No appointment needed, but if you keep missing her you can email her atThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to schedule a specific time to come by.
What to Bring: There is a $10 CASH ONLY deposit for the shirt and the name tag. If you would like more than one shirt, it is $10 per additional shirt.
If you no longer are working at the rec center, once you turn in your CLEAN shirt and name tag to Jessica Klotz, you will get that money back. -
All UAB University Recreation student employees are required to have a valid Red Cross First Aid/CPR/EAD certification or equivalent. If you are currently certified, please send a copy of your valid certification to your Area Supervisor.
If you are not currently certified -- GREAT NEWS! URec offers in-house certification courses and they are offered to all URec staff only for $35 and it will last for 2 years. It is a Blended Learning Course, meaning you will be required to complete an Online portions as well as to come in to complete In-Class portion.
During your Initial New Hire Paperwork, you should have received a red slip from you Area Supervisor to give you access to the discounted URec Staff Only First Aid/CPR/AED course.
In order to register you for the next available URec Staff Only First Aid/CPR/AED course, please stop by Membership Services no later than Monday, of the week the certification class start and give them the red slip. They will register you for the course.
Once registration for the course that you have enrolled in close, you will receive a link to complete the Online portion of the course. Be sure to print out the Confirmation of Course Completion certificate. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: You must complete the Online portion prior to coming to the In-Class portion and bring in your Confirmation of Course Completion.
Any student who is not listed on the course roster and/or does not provide the Course Instructor with the Confirmation of Course Completion will NOT be permitted into the In-Class portion of the training.
Note: Students who stay working with University Recreation for more than 2 years, you can get recertified at no additional cost. -
In order to complete the Online Bloodborne Pathogen Training, please complete the following steps:
- Go to uab.edu/adminsys/
- Click on “Medicine Learning”
- Log in with your Blazer ID
- Type “Bloodborne Pathogens” or “OHS_BIO500” and hit search
- Click on the Protection of Children Training
- Click enroll and complete the course
- Once you complete the course, send the Certificate of Completion to your Area Supervisor

In order to complete the Online Protection of Children Training, please complete the following steps:
- Go to UAB Learning Systems
- Click “Medicine Learning”
- Log in with your Blazer ID
- Type “Protection of Children Training” and hit search
- Click on the Protection of Children Training
- Click enroll and complete the course
- Once you complete the course, send the Certificate of Completion to your Area Supervisor

In order to complete the PCI Compliance Training, please complete the following steps:
- Go to UAB Learning Systems
- Click on the Learning System (LMS) Login
- Log in with your Blazer ID
- At the top of the website, click on Catalog
- Type “Security Training - PCI Security Awareness Training-DSOC” and hit Search
- Click on the Security Training - PCI Security Awareness Training-DSOC
- Click Enroll and complete the course
Once you complete the course, send the Certificate of Completion to your Area Supervisor

University Recreation utilizes Sub It Up, an online scheduling tool, to schedule student employees’ shifts. This program is utilized by most of the Areas of University Recreation. Please ask your supervisor if your position requires Sub It Up account.
In order to set up your Sub It Up account, please complete the following steps:- Click HERE
- Use your UAB Email as your username
- Your temporary password is U@BCampus1
- Login and update your contact information
- Fill out your availability **

Please contact your Area Supervisor for direction on how to complete Area Specific Training.

After your start date you will be able to log into Oracle, UAB’s payroll system, to sign up for Direct Deposit. Please note your first check will be mailed to the address that you indicated on the I-9 form of your new hire paperwork.

- Click on the Self Service Applications
- Click on the Manage Direct Deposit Account
- Enter your account information
