The Environmental Health & Safety team has assigned students the annual online emergency evacuation course in Canvas. “We strongly encourage all UAB students to complete this course and employees to ensure their training is up to date,” said Rob Emmons, director of Campus and Life Safety. “An emergency can happen anytime. The best way to prepare is to take this emergency evacuation course so you have a better understanding of how to react in your campus environment.”
UAB is required to provide this training by both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and state and local fire codes. The online course replaces the in-person training the department previously conducted. The goal with online training is to better accommodate the campus community and minimize overall disruption, while helping achieve compliance across a larger audience. Specific buildings identified by Campus and Life Safety will have in-person evacuation trainings in addition to this online training requirement. The department will reach out to those groups individually as needed.
If you have questions about this process, please reach out to Jerry Turner, safety officer with Campus Safety, at 205-996-5091.
