The handheld PCF assembly harnesses a unique arrangement of materials in order to encourage crystallization through the creation of a temperature gradient. Experiment solutions are prepared individually and stored at a specified temperature (between -95 and 37 °C). On orbit, a crew member will initiate the growth process by altering the storage temperature of the payload that houses the assembly.
