What was most impactful to you about your military service?
I enjoyed seeing the world. In several cases, we visited countries less fortunate than the United States, without freedoms. We actually visited Lenningrad, in the Soviet Union in 1975. This visit coincided with the fall of Saigon in the U.S., while the Soviets viewed it as the Liberation of Saigon. The value of freedom has has not been lost on those that served their country. Freedoms come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God, and the sacrifice of thousands of veterans that came before us.
How does your military experience assist you in your employment at UAB?
I would say it helped mature me, but I think age has also contributed to my growth in life. I see the same struggles that were issues around the globe in 1975, are at issue at UAB. The desire to support freedom while at the same time ensure a safe and peaceful lifestyle in your hometown. The words of JFK from my generation now carry more weight: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

Career Resources for Vets
Post-Military Careers at UABThe transition from military life to civilian life is not always easy. At UAB, we value the veterans in our workforce and are actively involved in veteran recruitment and outreach. That is why the Birmingham Business Journal named UAB Birmingham's Most Veteran Friendly Employer in 2016.
Ready to get started? Visit the UAB Careers page to browse and apply for current job openings at UAB.
Post-Military ResumesWhen it comes time to create your civilian job resume, the key will be translating your military experience to civilian employment. You cannot assume potential employers will have knowledge of the military. For instance, employers with no military exposure may not understand common terminology and acronyms so you will want to translate these into civilian terms. A good idea is to show your resume to non-military friends and ask them to point out terms they do not understand.
Also, check out the Military to Civilian Occupation Translator, an online tool to help convert military experience into civilian careers.
Additional Career Resources for Veterans- National Resource Directory: A collection of online resources to assist with the transition from military to a civilian career.

A simple thank you is never enough. It feels paltry in comparison to the commitment made by you and your family. I cannot accurately describe the volume of gratitude I have for your dedication and service. So even though it seems small to me, thank you so much for keeping us safe and believing in our future.
— Kim Kilgore

Thanks to all our armed forces for your diligence and effort! My dad was a West Point graduate and retired Army Colonel, and I grew up surrounded by his former classmates and Reservists as they continued to serve and improve their communities. My dad received his Master's in Mechanical Engineering from UAB as part of the GI Bill. He had strong morals and no tolerance for dishonesty, and he was a role model for excellence my whole life. He died a few years ago from an Agent Orange-related cancer, and my mother's continued financial and health foundations are secured because of Army retirement and Veterans Benefits. We are grateful for both the people who serve and the programs created to support them. I am proud to currently be UAB Libraries' point of contact for ROTC and Veterans' Services, so I can also contribute to that support network.
— Marliese Thomas

Saying 'thank you' seems so small compared to what you have given up, and done, in order to protect the freedom we all take for granted. It's all I can do, and all i can share aside from a Scripture of hope: Matthew 5:9 - 'Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.'. Thank you for standing in the gap and for striving for peace; you will be blessed, and I am eternally grateful for you..

My father, younger sister and myself have all served in the military. Starting with my father who served in the U.S Army (2006-2011) and did two tours in Afghanistan as a combat radio operator. His sacrifice has given way to his children and grandchildren to use the benefits earned in his service for us to have a better future. My younger sister also served the United States Army (2013-2020), first in the national guard as an honor guard for five years and did two years of active duty station at Fort Carson, Colorado. For me, I joined the United States Air Force (2011-2012) and was station at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas and was in training as a military police. We all served individually for this country but we are united because of our service. We have a bond amongst one another that goes beyond family. We are all veterans who have worked hard and served only in sacrifice for another. My mother and older brother have also sacrifice as our family members and we show them just as much honor and respect as loved ones burden with family being in the line of fire for the country. I think I can speak for my dad and younger sister as well as me that I wouldn't change one thing about serving our country. Also to close friends who have also served, some who are dearly departed, I want to give thanks to you all. My brother and sister in arms forever. And thanks to the family members who supports us through and through. God bless America.
