Meet the Dean for Students

Nick VanWagoner web

  • Nick Van Wagoner, MD, PhD, is our Associate Dean for Students. Dr. Van Wagoner is an Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, in the Department of Medicine. He has served as a Associate Dean for Students since 2018. Before that, he served as the Assistant Dean for Students in Medical Student Services.

Dr. Van Wagoner has a passion for research. He studies sexually transmitted infections and HIV in at-risk populations with a focus on how societal variables influence a person’s chance of infection. Additionally, he currently serves on several national councils and committees focused on infectious diseases research and treatment.

Dr. Van Wagoner is a Utah native and earned his undergraduate degree from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, before coming to UAB to earn his doctorate in cell biology. He also completed his medical training—including medical school, residency and fellowship—at the UAB School of Medicine before joining the faculty as an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2011.

As Associate Dean for Students, he gives leadership to all aspects of student support within Medical Student Services.

MSS On-Call

  • An MSS dean or director is always on call. You can reach MSS On-Call anytime by calling UAB Paging 205-934-3411 and asking to page the MSS Director on Call.

ReportIt

  • ReportIt is an online system students can use to report concerns or commendations about anything related to medical school faculty, students, staff, or facilities.
  • Certain deans receive the reports, depending on the type of concern or commendation submitted.
  • Students have the option to submit a report anonymously, but we encourage you to include your name, so if a dean needs to ask follow-up questions they can. Anonymous reports are often difficult to act on in a meaningful way.
  • You can submit a report by clicking here.
