The UAB Heersink School of Medicine's Graduate Medical Education (GME) enterprise is one of the largest and most comprehensive academic training programs in the nation.
Sponsored through University of Alabama Hospital, the GME enterprise includes more than 106 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs across four campuses and supports over 1,200 residents and fellows annually. UAB ranks among the nation's largest sponsoring institutions and continues to expand its graduate medical education footprint in response to workforce and healthcare needs across Alabama and beyond.
Guided by a mission to prepare physicians for successful careers in clinical practice, research, education, and healthcare leadership, the GME enterprise emphasizes excellence in patient care, quality improvement, patient safety, professionalism, trainee well-being, and mentorship. The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides institutional oversight for accreditation, program development, compliance, trainee support, faculty development, and continuous quality improvement across all residency and fellowship programs.
UAB maintains continued accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a Sponsoring Institution and, following its most recent review, holds continued accreditation with no citations or Areas for Improvement. The institution's next 10-year accreditation site visit is anticipated in 2027.
