Supporting the medical education mission, a number of offices offer services and support for students, faculty, and staff throughout the stages of medical school and beyond.
The Heersink School of Medicine provides state-of-the-art facilities that support learners across the continuum of medical education. Located in Volker Hall, the Gross Anatomy Lab and Surgical Anatomy Lab support foundational anatomy education for students in healthcare training programs as well as advanced procedural and surgical training for clinicians. Through the generous gift of anatomical donors, learners are able to develop a deeper understanding of human anatomy, strengthen clinical and procedural skills, and translate anatomical knowledge into patient care.
The Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME) advances lifelong learning and professional development for physicians and other healthcare professionals across UAB, the region, and beyond. As a Jointly Accredited provider of continuing education for the healthcare team, the division develops and delivers a broad portfolio of educational activities designed to improve knowledge, competence, performance, and patient outcomes. The office supports the School of Medicine's educational, clinical, and research missions by partnering with departments, centers, and interprofessional colleagues to provide evidence-based continuing education aligned with emerging healthcare needs and quality improvement priorities.
The Office of International Medical Education (IME) advances the Heersink School of Medicine's global mission through international partnerships, learner exchanges, physician training pathways, and global health initiatives. IME oversees programs supporting international medical students, visiting scholars, graduate trainees, residents, fellows, and UAB medical students pursuing global health experiences. The office supports partnerships in nearly 60 countries and has facilitated more than 4,000 international admissions since its inception. Through these efforts, IME enhances UAB's global reach, expands educational and research collaborations, and strengthens the school's reputation as an international destination for medical education and physician training.
Established in 2016, the Physician-Scientist Development Office (PSDO) supports the development of future physician-scientists across the educational continuum, including undergraduate learners, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. As one of the first comprehensive physician-scientist development offices of its kind in the nation, the PSDO advances research training, career development, mentorship, and scholarly engagement through a broad portfolio of educational programs, research experiences, and career development initiatives. The office works closely with the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), and departments across the Heersink School of Medicine to strengthen the physician-scientist workforce and support the school's research mission.
