UAB SON Building

Since its founding as the state’s flagship school of nursing in 1950, the UAB School of Nursing has been known for producing leaders who transform health. Its rankings, along with the number of faculty and alumni in leadership positions at the local, state, national and international levels—past and present—are proof of the School’s success in developing strong leaders.

Leveraging this exceptional leadership and health policy expertise under a single umbrella, the UAB School of Nursing Leadership and Health Policy Initiative is working to build and sustain a strong and diverse cadre of nurse leaders educated to shape equitable and patient-centered health care. Formally investing in training faculty, students and community nurses positions them to better impact health and health care through transformational change.

The UAB School of Nursing Leadership and Health Policy Initiative has a two-pronged approach—advance the knowledge and expertise in health policy while building leadership skills in the field of advocacy.

Each arm of the Initiative has six strategic focus areas:

  • Advocacy/Training/Mentoring
  • Education
  • Discovery/Research
  • Sustainability
  • Dissemination
  • Policy Development

The alumni of these two Fellowships in leadership and health policy will be positioned to be a voice for the nursing profession, patients and families advancing health care quality from the bedside to the highest levels of government is a priority of this initiative.

The UAB School of Nursing Leadership and Health Policy Initiative is equipping not only the nurses who are formally participating in the initiative with a skillset that is unique, the Initiative also is working across academic programs to ensure all students are introduced to leadership and policy advocacy skills.

Mission

The UAB School of Nursing Leadership and Health Policy Initiative advances expertise in leadership and health policy to strengthen the knowledge base for nurses to advocate for and lead change that will remove barriers to health care, reduce health disparities and create societal advancements to improve overall population health.
