2022 UAB Global Health Case Competition
The 2022 UAB Global Health Case Competition took place virtually on Saturday, January 29, 2022.This year's competition was co-sponsored by the Sparkman Center for Global Health, the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, and the Office of Education Abroad. Starting in summer of 2021, we worked closely with partners at the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy to identify a case topic relevant to the health challenges their community currently faces.
During competition week, students had the opportunity to attend a virtual conversation with Nelson Ole Reiyia, Cofounder of Nashulai Conservancy, and Maggie Koshal Reiyia, Director of Family, Gender, and Education with Nashualai. They were joined in conversation by Dr. Stacy Moak, UAB CAS Department of Political Science & Public Administration. Watch the full talk here on YouTube.
Nine teams of students representing ten schools across UAB presented to panels of judges with their recommendations and plans for promoting and protecting health among Maasai elders in Kenya. The case presented three specific health issues: lung health, eye health & cancer. Each team focused on one of these health issues. In the morning, they competed against the other teams working on the same health issue. The top three teams proceed to a final round with a new panel of judges. From there, the first, second and third place positions were awarded.

2019 Statewide Case Competition
The 2019 Statewide Global Health Case Competition took place on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019. Ten teams of students representing six universities presented to panels of judges with their recommendations and plans for addressing indigenous child health outcomes in the face of development and deforestation in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. The top three teams were then tasked with editing their strategy to incorporate a budget increase and present again to the full panel of judges. From there, the first, second and third place positions were awarded.
All who attended were astounded by the creativity, ingenuity and planning that students put together in their presentations. The 3rd annual Statewide Global Health Case Competition was a success thanks to the students who participated, univeristy professors and staff who made it happen, UAB professors who served as mentors for all the statewide teams, and the panel of judges representing various universities as well as community groups. Thanks to all who took part! We hope to see you again next year.
