Research Opportunity: Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations
The Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Population (CEESP) Program provides funding for students to travel and conduct mentored summer research internships in foreign countries and U.S. minority settings. The Program is open to graduate public health students (MPH, MSc, PhD, and Dr.PH) from all schools and programs of public health in the U.S. Over the past 15 years, students have conducted research utilizing the strong infrastructure of the Program in East, West, and North Africa; the Middle East; Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Far East.

This opportunity supports mentored research training in global health for eligible U.S doctoral candidates and U.S. and LMIC postdoctoral (MD, MD/PhD, ScD or equivalent degree) fellows. Successful applicants spend up to 12 months abroad at one of 24 affiliated institutions across 20 countries, where they gain experience conducting research in international settings.

Stigma and Health Among Refugees in Istanbul, Turkey
Dr. Bulent Turan examines how stigma and discrimination—as well as other psycho-social factors—affect different populations, such as people living with HIV, substance use, and epilepsy, or living as a refugee. He also examines intersecting stigmas due to race, gender, sexual orientation, and poverty in order to understand and address disparities in physical and psychological health outcomes. Dr. Turan was also a recipient of the 2020 Sparkman Center Pilot Grant to research stigma amongst refugees in Istanbul, Turkey.
