  • Join University Recreation as we prepare for Thanksgiving festivities with #MOVEmber!

    Each week URec will be hosting a series of challenges, workouts, and Safe Lifting 101 workshops designed to help you remain fit and active throughout the holiday season. With the help of our registered dietician, Katie Ellison, we will also be incorporating healthy dieting tips and recipes into #MOVEmber.

    Our vision here at the UAB University Recreation is an enhanced lifestyle of healthy living for the UAB community and beyond, so whether you love working out or recreating tasty recipes that are guilt-free, there will be something here for everyone to enjoy.

  • Week 1: November 4 - November 10


    Weekly Challenge: Plank

    Find a fitness attendant on the fitness floor any time between November 4-10 to compete in our Movember Plank Challenge! The fitness attendant will record your max plank time. The top 3 males and top 3 females will get recognition. You are welcome to compete any time we are open during the week and as many times as you’d like.


    Safe lifting 101: Monday and Wednesday at noon

    Meet with one of our excellent Personal Trainers, Devon, to teach you the correct spotting techniques, how to properly use free weights (including picking the proper weight, foot placement, and partial versus full range of motion). Additionally, Devon will explain to you how to perform an appropriate progressive overload (how to program workouts efficiently).

    Patrons can pre-register on the Campus Recreation Mobile app (like they would for a UFit class) for the Safe Lifting 101 Session.

    Katie, our awesome Registered Dietitian, will share one of her favorite recipes with you!


    Workout of the Month:

    URec FitWell team will share with you a written out workout that you can add to your regular workout routine or completely replace your workout routine with.

  • Week 2: November 11 - November 17


    TRY OUT URec for FREE

    Any UAB employee who visits the membership desk and presents their ONE Card can get a free one week trial. During #MOVEmber, employees who present their ONE Card, confirm they are following UAB URec on Instagram and disclose the #MOVEmber secret code, available on social media, can try URec free for TWO weeks! This TWO week FREE trial offer is only available until November 30, 2019.


    Weekly Challenge: Wall Sits

    Looking to test your competitive drive and endurance? Come find a fitness attendant on the fitness floor any time between November 11th-17th to compete in our #MOVEmber Wall Sit Challenge! The fitness attendant will record your max wall sit time, and you will receive recognition if you are one of the lucky men or women to place in our top 3! You are welcome to compete any time we are open during the week and as many times as you’d like, so come give it a shot!


    Exercising Your Thoughts

    If you've had a stressful semester and are looking for an opportunity to relax, a little meditation might do the trick! Meditation comes with lots of benefits for both the mind and body, as it reduces stress at both the mental and physical level. We even offer various yoga and meditation UFit classes throughout the week, especially on Saturdays. So whether you're a zen guru or if you're simply interested in learning more, come check out our offerings at the UAB Campus Recreation Center!

    Food for Mood

    Looking for a tasty snack to brighten your day? Try some blueberries! Blueberry flavonoids have shown to improve executive functions of the brain, which includes regulating emotions, empathy, and concentration. Our awesome Registered Dietitian will share one of her favorite blueberry recipes with you! Be sure to check our Social Media every day!

    We want to hear from you! That is why this month we will have a bulletin board set up in the lobby of the UAB Campus Recreation Center complete with pens, markers, and sticky notes. Feel free to stop by and leave a note on our board that tells us #WhyYouMove, and have your note displayed in our lobby for all your friends to see!
