Emeritus appointments, which acknowledge outstanding faculty members and express appreciation for their years of service, require Board of Trustees approval.
Requirements
- A faculty member may be considered for emeritus status after ten or more years of service with The University of Alabama System, or with fewer years if they have made an exceptional contribution to UAB or the System.
- An emeritus appointment to a faculty rank may become effective only after the faculty member retires.
An academic administrative emeritus appointment (e.g., Dean Emeritus) may be conferred when the faculty member resigns from the administrative role, even if they continue to hold a full-time faculty position until retirement.
Process
All materials originate in the department and should be sent to the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development in the Provost’s Office for review and approval.
- Submission to Board Liaison
Once approved, Faculty Affairs will forward the submission package to the Board Liaison. The submission must include:
Board Agenda Item Recommendation Form (must include approval signatures from the Department Chair and Dean)- Chair’s Letter of Recommendation (addressed to the appropriate Dean)
- Dean’s Letter of Recommendation (addressed to the Provost)
- Provost’s Letter of Recommendation (addressed to the President; generated by Faculty Affairs)
- Resolution (sent electronically to the Board Liaison as a Word document; must include the faculty member’s retirement date which is always the last day of the month)
- Curriculum Vitae (sent electronically to the Board Liaison)
- Internal Approvals
The Board Liaison will secure approvals from the President, and Legal Counsel. - System Office Submission
The Board Liaison will transmit the submission to the UA System Office once it has been approved by the President and Legal Counsel. - Final Notification
The Board Liaison will receive the final approval notification from the System Office and distribute the information to the Provost, Deans, and Vice Presidents.
