All appointments to endowed chairs, professorships, and deanships must be approved by the Board of Trustees. Selection procedures may vary among schools, colleges, divisions, or departments to align with the practices and customs of specific academic disciplines and/or professions.
Requirements
- A search for candidates is mandatory, whether internal or external.
- Upon selecting a candidate, the search committee chair must provide a letter outlining the search process and listing the committee members.
- Letters of support from peers both within and outside the institution are required.
- Recommendation letters from the department chair and dean must accompany the submission.
Note:
Endowed appointments associated with an offer of employment must clearly state that the appointment is pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
Existing faculty and administrators should not use the endowed title until Board approval has been confirmed.
Process
- Submission to Board Liaison
The Dean’s office will provide submission package to the Board Liaison, that includes the following documents:
Board Agenda Item Recommendation Form (must include approval signatures from the Chair and Dean)- Dean’s Letter of Recommendation (addressed to the Provost)
- Department Chair’s Letter of Recommendation (addressed to the appropriate Dean)
- Search Committee Recommendation Letter (must include the names of all committee members)
- External Recommendation Letters – Three (3) letters from peers outside UAB
- Internal Recommendation Letters – Three (3) letters from peers within UAB
- Resolution – Sent electronically as a Word document; must include the establishment date of the endowed chair/professorship/deanship
- Curriculum Vitae – Sent electronically to the Board Liaison
- Internal Approvals
The Board Liaison will secure letters of recommendation and approvals from the Provost and President. - System Office Submission
The Board Liaison will obtain final approval from the President and Legal Counsel before submitting the complete package to the UA System Office for consideration by the Board of Trustees. - Final Notification
The Board Liaison will receive the final approval notification from the UA System Office and distribute the information via email to the Provost, Deans, and Vice Presidents.
