WBRC FOX6 News visited campus in August to report on international students who travel great distances to pursue their goals at UAB.

From a competitive pool of nominees, three graduate students have been selected to receive the prestigious UAB National Alumni Society Dean’s Scholarship for 2023.

“There are a million things I can do in life,” said Teresa Beamon, a UAB graduate student from Camden, Miss. “Most of them, things and places I’ll never be or see.”

Ten faculty were honored with the 2023 UAB Graduate Dean's Excellence in Mentorship Award April 11 at 4 p.m. at the UAB National Alumni Society House. The annual award recognizes full-time regular UAB faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments as mentors of graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows.

Casey Mahoney-Crane and Banks Stamp are the recipients of the 2023 UAB Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies.

The UAB Graduate School, Black Graduate Student Association, Graduate Biomedical Student Outreach and Graduate Student Government have combined forces to offer a week of fun and exciting activities for this year's Graduate Student Appreciation Week, which is April 3-7.

Meimei Wang, a Graduate Biomedical Sciences (GBS) Ph.D. candidate in the lab of Dr. Yang Zhou, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a two-year predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association. The award runs through the end of 2024 to support Wang’s study, “The function of ELMSAN1 in direct cardiac reprogramming.”

The Summer 2022 UAB Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and Master's Student Commencement was held August 12 at the Bartow Arena. During the summer, more than 1,100 students earned graduate degrees, including 141 doctoral degrees. The Graduate School would like to congratulate all of the Summer 2022 graduates!

The environment and conservation recently lost a major warrior. University of Alabama at Birmingham alumnus Ricardo Tapilatu (Ph.D., 2014, Department of Biology) tragically passed in Indonesia during a scuba expedition with students while trying to preserve some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world.

The UAB campus community was challenged to tell us a story with only 6 words and a visual aid during UAB Graduate School's sixth annual Say It In 6 competition. Participants submitted an image and six words depicting any story they wanted to tell — about their life, their experiences, things they love or have learned. And the submissions were amazing!

The UAB Graduate School and the Graduate Student Government are very excited to announce this year's schedule of activities for Graduate Student Appreciation Week, which is April 4-8.
