Many things in life shift when you experience a spinal cord injury. How you move, care for your body, and complete daily tasks can change. One aspect of life post-injury that may be an unexpected, and literal roadblock, is the lack of accessibility in public spaces.

March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize the vital role social workers play in advancing patient care, supporting families, and strengthening communities. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine held its 2026 Match Day on Friday, March 20, at the Alabama Theatre. The annual event marks a major milestone in medical education, as students learn where they will continue their training in residency programs across the country. This year, 99.5% of UAB students matched, reflecting the school’s continued strength in preparing graduates for the next phase of their medical careers.

In March, several of our colleagues were recognized for their years of service working at UAB and the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The UAB Service Awards honor employees at each five-year milestone who have completed five or more years of service to UAB.

John Killian, M.D., Ph.D., a volunteer clinical assistant professor in the UAB Division of Transplantation, is working to understand the science behind organ rejection and how it can potentially be avoided.

In an effort to strengthen clinical operations leadership and develop system-level capacity for continuous improvement, Children’s of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pediatrics introduced the Excellence Through Partnership program, a strategic leadership model designed to align medical and nursing leadership.
