New car-sharing program means there's a ride when you need one

car sharingUAB and Enterprise Rent-A-Car have created a car-sharing program for students and employees ages 18 and older with a credit card and valid driver's license.

Registered members will be able to use two Ford Focus cars parked in the Blazer Hall circle.

"This initiative provides students with an affordable transportation option, even if they don't have a vehicle on campus," said Andre Davis, UAB's director of parking and transportation services. "It also is available for personal use by faculty and staff.

"We hope the program will reduce the need for cars on campus and contribute to our sustainability efforts."

The hourly rate is $8, daily $59 and overnight $35. The first 200 miles are free, but users are charged 25 cents for every mile exceeding that limit. The cars each come with a prepaid fuel card.

The $35 annual membership fee is being waived.
