    What has been UAB’s response to COVID-19?

    UAB has suspended in-person classes for the summer and is operating under a limited business model to safeguard the campus community from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. You can learn more about UAB’s policies regarding the novel COVID-19 coronavirus at www.uab.edu/coronavirus.

    Is orientation happening in-person?

    To safeguard our campus community from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, UAB is moving all Summer/Fall 2020 orientation sessions online. Orientation is still required and will include elements of self-led and live content.

    Will I be refunded for my orientation fee?

    All optional fees such as on-campus housing, optional half-day, or parent/guest fees will be refunded to your original method of payment. Please expect refunds no later than the first day of Fall classes. The student Orientation Fee or Freshman Enrollment Deposit is not refundable.

    What will my orientation fee be used for?

    The fee guarantees your spot at UAB and pays for staff, programming, and other administrative costs.

    Do I still need to sign up for an orientation date?

    Yes, you must sign up for an orientation date at www.uab.edu/orientation in order to have access to the Online Orientation in Canvas and the live Zoom sessions.

    When can I register for classes?

    You will be able to register for classes on your orientation date as long as you have completed the Online Orientation in Canvas and met with your academic advisor. There will be an open Zoom hour on your orientation date where you can drop in to ask questions of the Orientation Leaders and to get help registering for classes and setting up your schedule.

    How can I learn about on-campus involvement opportunities?

    The Online Orientation in Canvas includes information about campus involvement. We also encourage you to participate in the Online Orientation Expo. All new students will have the chance to learn about ways to get involved by talking with student organizations and UAB departments through live Zoom sessions. You will learn more about this in the Online Orientation and by email.

    Is there additional content for honors-only Orientation sessions?

    Yes, you will receive instructions from the Honors College about an information session on Zoom the evening prior to your orientation date.

    Online Orientation in Canvas

    How do I access Canvas?

    You will automatically be added to the Canvas course. You’ll receive an email with a link to BlazerNET when it’s time to complete Online Orientation. Click on the Canvas link in the right-hand menu of BlazerNET and select the orientation course from the Canvas home page.

    Parents and family members will have an additional step of creating an account in order to access the Canvas course. They’ll receive an email telling them how to create an account.

    What technology do I need for the Online Orientation in Canvas?

    • Device (such as a computer or smart phone) that can play audio and video
    • Mobile users may want to download the Canvas Student app for easier functionality

    What if I need help using Canvas?

    The orientation course contains a tutorial on how to use Canvas. If you have tech support questions, select the Help button on the left-hand global navigation menu in Canvas.     What will I learn about in the Canvas course?

    The Online Orientation in Canvas will get you connected with almost everything a UAB student needs to know before starting at UAB. You will get tips from Orientation Leaders, faculty, and staff on how to best use your time in college to succeed inside and outside the classroom while also learning about important resources and policies to get you on your way to becoming a Blazer.

    Family members will also learn about policies and resources as well as tips on how to best support their student.

    When will I be able to complete the Online Orientation in Canvas?

    Transfer and non-traditional students, you can complete the Online Orientation in Canvas now as long as you’ve made an orientation reservation at www.uab.edu/orientation.

    Traditional freshmen, you will be emailed the invitation to complete the Online Orientation in Canvas one week prior to your orientation date.

    What happens if I don’t complete the Online Orientation in Canvas?

    Your orientation hold will prevent you from registering for classes or modifying your class schedule until you complete the Online Orientation in Canvas.

    Remote Academic Advising

    What technology do I need to participate in remote academic advising?

    Some advisors will meet with you by phone or email while others may utilize Zoom to have a “face-to-face” meeting. If your advisor plans to use Zoom, you will need the following:

    • Device (such as computer or smart phone) with a camera and audio capabilities
    • Strong internet connection
    • Mobile users may want to download the Zoom app for easier functionality.

    When will I meet with my academic advisor?

    Your academic advisor will contact you prior to your orientation date to set up a remote advising appointment with you. Check your UAB email frequently on BlazerNet as your advisor will contact you through that account.

    How do I find out who my advisor is?

    Your advisor’s name can be found under your picture on your BlazerNET home page.

    Orientation-Day Meetings on Zoom

    How do I access Zoom?

    Students do not need a Zoom account to participate in a meeting. Just click on the link provided to you by email and choose to run the application.

    What technology do I need to participate in the live Zoom sessions on my orientation day?

    • Device (such as computer or smart phone) with a camera and audio capabilities
      • We encourage you to access the live Zoom sessions on a laptop or desktop for a better view. However, you can still fully participate on a phone or tablet.
    • Strong internet connection
    • All live sessions will be conducted through Zoom. Mobile users may want to download the Zoom app for easier functionality.

    What if I need help using Zoom?

    You can find additional information about Zoom including tutorials and FAQs at https://www.uab.edu/elearning/academic-technologies/zoom.

    What will happen during the live Zoom sessions?

    The Zoom session will allow you to connect with other new students, ask questions of current students and a UAB professor, and get help registering for classes. See the schedule at www.uab.edu/orientation.

    On traditional freshman orientation dates, parents and family members also have an opportunity to ask questions of current UAB students, a family member of a current student, and representatives from a variety of student services. See the schedule at www.uab.edu/orientation.

    When should I participate in the live Zoom sessions?

    The live Zoom session is on your scheduled orientation date starting at 9:00am (5:30 pm for the June 15 evening orientation date). Look for more details on the schedule at www.uab.edu/orientation.

    Am I required to participate in the live Zoom sessions?

    The live Zoom sessions that happen on your orientation day are required for traditional freshman students and optional for transfer and non-traditional students. Parents and family members of traditional freshmen also have the option, but are not required, to participate in Parent and Family Orientation.

    Online Parent and Family Orientation

    Should parents and family members complete orientation with their student?

    No, parents and family members have a separate online orientation with information about how to support your UAB student.

    What will parents and family members do for orientation?

    Parents and family members can complete a separate online orientation for families on Canvas. Once you have scheduled an orientation date, family members will be sent an invitation to register for Parent and Family Orientation as long as we have their email addresses on file.

    On traditional freshman orientation days, there will be live Zoom Q&A sessions starting at 3:00 PM CT following the live student sessions. Family members will receive the link to Zoom by email the week prior to the student’s orientation date.     What is the fee for Parent and Family Orientation?

    There is no cost for family members to participate in an online orientation session.

  • Am I required to attend orientation?

    Goin’ Green New Student Orientation is required for all incoming degree-seeking students who are not admitted to an online-only major.

    Does it matter which session I attend?

    We recommend attending the earliest session possible. Attending an earlier session will allow you to register for classes earlier, which means you have a better chance of getting the classes you want. Keep in mind that orientation sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The sooner you make a reservation, the more likely you will be able to select an earlier session. The size of each session is limited so your advisor and other campus reps can work closely with you.

    How and when will I know which session to attend?

    Students will attend an orientation session prior to their first semester at UAB. All sessions open for students to sign up in early October. There are three main types of New Student Orientation that are offered throughout the year:

    Spring New Student Orientation

    • Transfer and freshman students attending their first semester in the spring

    Summer/Fall Transfer New Student Orientation

    • Transfer and non-traditional freshman students (graduated high school two or more years ago) attending their first semester in the summer or fall

    Summer/Fall Freshman New Student Orientation

    • Freshman students starting at UAB the year after or the same year as high school graduation

    Please note: there are some Fall Freshman orientation sessions that are reserved for select student populations.  When you make a reservation for your orientation session online, you are shown only orientation sessions that apply to you.  For example, if you are in the Honors College, you will only be shown Honors College orientation sessions.

    Do I need to take a placement test?

    • You are required to take the math placement assessment unless you are transferring in a college-level math course from a post-secondary institution (excludes remedial college math and Finite Mathematics) with a grade of "C" or better or you have earned college-level math credit for qualifying AP, IB, AICE, or CLEP scores, or you are an incoming first-time freshman with a minimum ACT math sub-score of 29 or SAT math score of 680.
    • Math placement exam scores from other institutions will not be accepted.
    • The math placement assessment must be taken online before attending orientation. You can access the assessment through BlazerNET at www.uab.edu/blazernet.

    What if I need special accommodations during orientation?

    Please notify us in advance if you, your family, or your guests require special accommodations to participate in orientation.  Accommodation requests must be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at least two weeks prior to your scheduled orientation session so necessary arrangements can be made.

    Will I receive a confirmation or reminder?

    Once you complete the online reservation process, two confirmation emails are sent:

    1. A payment confirmation will be sent to the e-mail of the person making the reservation (sometimes this will go to a parent’s email who is paying the reservation fee).
    2. An orientation reservation confirmation will be automatically emailed to the student’s UAB email address.

    The student will receive additional reminder emails to their personal email address before their scheduled orientation session (the same one where you’ve been receiving UAB admission emails).  These emails will contain final reminders, directions, and a parking pass.

    What if I would like to change my major?

    If you have decided to change your major since your admission to UAB, you can visit uab.edu/changemajor to change your major. There will also be a link available to change your major at the same time you are making your reservation to attend orientation.

    You have already been assigned an academic advisor based upon your major at admission.  In order for us to schedule time for you to meet with the appropriate advisor, you must complete a major change at least seven days prior to your orientation session.

    What will I do at orientation?

    Goin’ Green New Student Orientation is your most important first step in becoming a Blazer.  All of the programs and information are designed to connect you to UAB and prepare you for success.  You will:

    • Meet with faculty and academic advisors
    • Register for classes
    • Discuss academic expectations
    • Discover resources designed to help you succeed
    • Build a network of campus contacts
    • Check out opportunities and organizations that can help you get involved on campus
    • Meet other students – current and new – and start building new friendships

    Am I required to get any immunizations prior to attending orientation?

    Immunization records are not required to attend orientation, but all immunization records must be submitted before the first day of classes. Submission of immunization records is an online process. Students will receive detailed information in their UAB email on how to provide proof of immunizations.

    How do I reschedule my orientation date?

    When will I register for classes?

    You will register for classes at your orientation session when you meet with your academic advisor. After meeting with your advisor, you will register for classes with advisors and Orientation Leaders available to assist you.

    How do I submit my ONE Card photo?

    You can submit your ONE Card photo online at uab.edu/onecardphoto, and it must meet certain criteria. If for some reason you are unable to submit your ONE Card photo online, you may take your ONE Card photo at orientation.

    What is my BlazerID? Is that the same as my ONE Card?

    A BlazerID is a computer login name that UAB uses campus-wide. You must use your BlazerID to reserve a spot for Goin’ Green New Student Orientation.

    New students obtain their ONE Cards during orientation.  UAB employees who later become students may already have a ONE Card as their Photo ID Badge and will not receive a new card at orientation. Your ONE Card has many functions, including serving as your photo ID, granting you access to the Campus Recreation Center and UAB Athletic events, and for access to your Meal Plan, Dragon Cash, and Blazer Bucks accounts.

    When will I get my ONE Card?

    You will receive your ONE Card when you arrive on campus for classes. UAB employees who already have a ONE Card as their Photo ID badge and will not receive a new one.

    If I decide to not attend UAB, is orientation refundable?

    The Freshman Enrollment Deposit and orientation fee are non-refundable. However, if you choose to attend UAB in the future, your original payment will be documented so you will only owe whatever amount is unpaid at that time.

    Why is orientation required?

    All students are required to attend Goin’ Green New Student Orientation because it is an introduction to UAB’s culture as well as an introduction to the academic and social expectations of the campus community. It is also most students’ first chance to interact with peers and meet their academic advisors who will help them to register for classes both at orientation and in future semesters. Plus, it’s fun! Try to make the most of the opportunity to learn about resources and student groups you might be interested in.

    What should I do if my sports practices or band camp rehearsals interfere with orientation?

    Try to schedule an orientation session that does not conflict with practice for athletic teams, band camp rehearsals, or other university-related activities. Coaches and directors are aware that you are required to attend orientation, so please talk to them if you are unable to schedule around a practice time.

    Will I pay for tuition at orientation?

  • How much does it cost to attend orientation?

    All first-time freshmen are required to pay a non-refundable $200 Freshman Enrollment Deposit to secure a place in the entering class. The Freshman Enrollment Deposit covers the cost of Goin’ Green New Student Orientation and associated enrollment fees. Students may not apply for on-campus housing or make a reservation for Goin’ Green New Student Orientation until the Freshman Enrollment Deposit is submitted.

    What is different about Honors orientation?

    Sessions for students in the Honors College include the regular programming offered at Goin’ Green. There are no differences the day of orientation except that the other students attending are also in the Honors College. There is an additional mandatory honors advising session the evening before all Honors College orientation dates.

  • How much does it cost to attend orientation?

    The nonrefundable fee for transfer and non-traditional student orientation is $50 for each student—this covers your meal, refreshments, program materials, and administrative services. If you choose to bring a family member or guest, there will be an additional $10 charge. Guests will attend Parent & Family Orientation which is run separately from the student orientation.

    What is Goin’ Green Plus?

    Goin’ Green Plus is a supplemental transition experience for incoming transfer and non-traditional freshman students that will allow you to meet other incoming students, UAB professors, and representatives from student organizations and services.

    Can I defer my orientation payment?

    I’m a UAB employee. Why do I have to attend orientation?

    Although there is some overlap in information you learn as a UAB employee, there are some things that will be different for you as a student. UAB requires orientation for all new students so that everyone has the same set of information before starting classes.

    We believe support from parents and family members makes students more successful at UAB. By attending Goin’ Green New Student Orientation, you will be taking a first step in showing support for your student as they begin a new journey while also learning tips on how to help them get on the path to success in college.

    Are family members required to attend?
