We are close! We have been busy planning for the reopening of the Campus Recreation Center. The current plan, as we work with UAB administration, is to have the building open for the fall semester. Once we have the specific date, we will communicate it out to everyone!

We closed our doors on March 15th and have been waiting to welcome all of our participants back so you can pursue your personal wellbeing goals. We know this has been a long time for you and the lack of information has been difficult for everyone. Thank you for your patience as we work through a safe reopening for this fall. To promote the health and safety of the campus community there will be changes to how you interact with us when we reopen. We will communicate what you can expect of us and what we are asking of you. We are all in this together and only united we will be successful.

We look forward to serving you in-person, but in the meantime, we hope you will continue to take advantage of our free virtual programming and engage with us in various opportunities, as your wellbeing remains our top priority.

In the meantime, we hope you will continue to take advantage of our FREE Virtual Programming and engage with us in various opportunities, as your well-being remains our top priority.

  • May 5, 2020 - Locker Rental Pickup Process

    Dear URec Members,

Now that Governor Kay Ivey has announced revised restrictions of the statewide stay-at-home order, University Recreation is now able to allow members to come in and collect their content from their rented lockers.

Please ensure you read this email message in its entirety so that you fully understand how this process will take place and can schedule the collection of your locker content time to best fit your needs.

In order to support social distancing efforts, University Recreation has created a staggered schedule that will limit the number of people coming into the Campus Recreation Center at a time and will decrease traffic and congestion during the pickup process.

Once you have received confirmation of your time slot, University Recreation staff will bag your belongings and have them ready for the designated pick up time.

Locker Content Pickup Appointment Sign Up:

All URec members who wish to pick up their locker content must sign up for a Locker Pickup appointment via the Locker Pickup Online Sign Up Form.

University Recreation requires at least 24-hour notice for any requests to pick up belongings.

Same day pick up appointments are not available due to the limited operations. When you open the locker belonging request form, you will see a space for you to input two requested time slots that best work with your personal schedule. University Recreation will do our best to try and adhere to the times that work best for you, however, due to limited operations and social distancing protocols, we cannot guarantee that these times will be available. Please ensure that you have confirmation of your pick-up time before coming to the Recreation Center.

You will receive an email confirmation with an approved time to pick up your belongings. Please make sure that you bring this confirmation with you, as well as a photo ID to ensure your identity.

Things to bring for your locker belongings pickup:

In order to ensure you are able to collect your locker belongings during your designated time and date, please make sure you have the following items ready for your pickup time to be able to successfully complete the check out process:

    • ONE Card or Valid Photo ID
    • Email Confirmation of your pickup time (Can be electronic)
    • Face masks (the city of Birmingham mandates that all persons wear a mask)

    Locker Belongings Pickup Process:

In order to best protect the health and safety of everyone at the Campus Recreation Center during the locker belonging pickup process, please adhere to the following guidelines: Do not come to campus if you are exhibiting any signs of COVID-19; have tested positive for COVID-19; or have been exposed to anyone showing symptoms of the virus. You must be wearing a face mask covering your mouth and nose while coming up to the facility due to the city of Birmingham ordinance. Those who do not have them on are subject to a $500 fine/30 days in jail. UAB will not have masks available for your use. UAB staff will be handling all belongings with gloves. During your pick up time, please practice social distancing and remain at least six (6) feet away from others.

Upon arrival at the Campus Recreation Center at your confirmed time-frame, you will be prompted to stop at a designated location in front of a table by the Main Entrance of the Recreation Center. Once you arrive, a University Recreation staff member will approach the table and ask for your ONE Card/photo ID and locker information. The staff member will then retrieve your belongings and bring them out to the table for the patron to take with them.

If you have any questions about the Locker content pickup process, please contact the University Recreation membership team. As we are currently working remotely, emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. is the most efficient way to reach us.

  • April 29, 2020 - Summer Programming Update

As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic with invaluable insights from our world-renown infectious disease experts and guidance from UAB leadership, a few decisions have occurred that have a major impact on our summer programming operations. As you might know, UAB and our sister campuses have closed or canceled many on-site activities in the interest of health and safety for the remainder of the spring semester.

Consistent with UAB's decision to hold all summer school sessions in online/alternative learning formats, all on-campus, in-person UAB University Recreation summer programs are canceled. We assure you that this decision is a hard one, as we always look forward to serving you by hosting our URec Summer Camps, Swim School, Outdoor Pursuits trips throughout the country, a variety of certification courses, Intramural Sports, and Fitness & Wellness opportunities on campus each summer.

As your well-being remains our top priority, we hope you have taken advantage of our FREE Virtual Programming and have engaged with us in the various virtual opportunities. As URec members, you have access to over 90 LIVE virtual group fitness classes each week, Les Mills On-Demand Videos, weekly LIVE Trivia Challenges, Virtual Outdoor Pursuits opportunities, and much more!

If you have any program area-specific questions, please reach out to our Membership Services team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We look forward to serving you in-person again, back at UAB in the near future. Stay safe and well.

  • March 15, 2020 - Campus Recreation Center Closure Update

    Dear URec Members and Guests:

A communication from the university regarding limited university business operations has just been sent out. Please visit UAB's dedicated website at https://www.uab.edu/coronavirus for more information.

Due to those updates, beginning today, March 15th at 9:00 p.m. the Campus Recreation Center will suspend all activities and cease operations completely.

We apologize for any inconvenience as a result of this closure, but the health and safety of you, our students, and our staff is our greatest concern at this time. Individuals should follow CDC recommendations and stay home and away from large public gatherings. Please be sure you are taking every precaution and follow all the guidelines available at https://www.uab.edu/coronavirus.

As this situation remains fluid we are working with administration to finalize protocols regarding the implications this closure has for our members. We will provide more updates once we learn more about the duration of the closure.

    Sincerely,

    Craig Decker,

    Director for University Recreation
