The coronavirus is a hot topic right now and everyone is trying to protect themselves from getting sick. You might be wondering how nutrition can play a role in protecting you from the coronavirus (COVID-19) or other illnesses like the flu or the common cold. Here are three nutrition tips to keep you healthy this season!

Katie Blog 1 1. Food safety is important! While it is unclear if the coronavirus can be spread through food, following food safety guidelines can help keep you healthy and protect yourself and others from illness. Buffet style foodservice has an increased chance of transmitting foodborne illnesses, so make sure you have clean hands and don’t have cold or flu-like symptoms when handling food.

2. Keep your immune system healthy with good nutrition! Many of the vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables can boost your immune system to help keep you healthy. Canned and frozen produce can have just as many nutrients as fresh produce.

3. Wash your hands before eating! This might seem simple but it’s a good way to prevent germs from getting into your mouth and causing illness. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before mealtime.
