STUDENT EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Award Categories

  • Excellence in Service

    Recognizes a student for their commitment to community engagement through volunteer service. This recipient has been an avid volunteer during the academic year. Dedicated service (either in-person or virtual) through an on-going relationship with a community partner is encouraged.


    Social Change Award

    This award recognizes a student that has demonstrated the desire to educate and support a particular community issue or cause in which they have significant interest. The nominee should have made the issue/cause an integral part of their college experience through efforts to build partnerships between students and UAB, or UAB and the community.


    Inclusive Campus Commitment

    Recognizes a student who embodies UAB Inclusive Campus Commitment by ensuring every member of the UAB community is treated with dignity and worth without any bias. This person will have made an active effort “to build an inclusive UAB.”

    UAB Inclusive Campus Commitment Statement:

    "I will strive to build an inclusive community at UAB. I believe that every student, faculty member, and staff member has the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and self-worth. I will work to ensure that my behavior and my actions do not harass or make fun of anyone due to their race, gender, culture, faith, class, sexual orientation, disability, or any other difference. Although I know I am not perfect, and I will make mistakes, I believe that it is my responsibility to act in a manner free of bias, exclusion, and discrimination. I believe I have the power to build an inclusive UAB."


    Outstanding Graduate or Professional Scholastic Achievement

    Recognizes a graduate or professional student who has maintained an excellent grade point average while balancing co-curricular activities. This student excels in their academic courses as well as successfully serves as a student leader on campus. *Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.5 or above.


    Outstanding Undergraduate Scholastic Achievement

    Recognizes an undergraduate student who has maintained an excellent grade point average while balancing co-curricular activities. This student excels in their academic courses as well as successfully serves as a student leader on campus. *Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.5 or above.


    Student Employee of the Year

    Recognizes student who contribute invaluable service to UAB through a part-time employment role. This student employee is reliable and has initiative, leadership skills, and has left a lasting impact their office/department. *Nominees must be UAB work-study or UAB hourly student workers. Graduate assistants are not eligible. Nominees should have worked in role for at least three months.


    Rising Star

    Recognizes a freshman or sophomore student who is an active contributor to a UAB student organization. This student has also worked to enhance personal leadership skills within an organization on campus or in the community, has established co-curricular involvement at UAB, and exhibits the potential and desire for continued leadership within the university community.


    Outstanding Graduate Student Leader

    Recognizes a graduate student who has gone "above and beyond" striving to make lasting improvements to their organization and significant contributions to campus life at UAB. This student will have demonstrated strong leadership skills, made an impact on the UAB community, and have been involved in a variety of organizations and activities both on and off campus. This student has demonstrated outstanding leadership, devotion, creativity, participation, and energy in their activities within a student organization. *Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above.


    Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader

    Recognizes an undergraduate student who has gone "above and beyond" striving to make lasting improvements to their organization and significant contributions to campus life at UAB. This student will have demonstrated strong leadership skills, made an impact on the UAB community, and have been involved in a variety of organizations and activities both on and off campus. This student has demonstrated outstanding leadership, devotion, creativity, participation, and energy in their activities within a student organization. *Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above.


    Transfer Student of the Year

    Recognizes a student who demonstrated a successful transition to the institution and has embraced involvement during their time at UAB. The recipient should have transferred 12 or more hours to UAB and completed 1 semester of study at UAB before nomination for this award.


    Outstanding First-Generation Student

    Recognizes a first-generation student who has excelled in academic and/or co-curricular activities. This student demonstrated resilience and adaptability while also demonstrating a commitment to campus engagement. To be eligible for this award, nominees must identify as first-generation (meaning their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a four-year college degree).

  • Commitment to Community Engagement

    Recognizes a student organization that has made significant contributions to the Birmingham community by organizing, supporting, and/or creating volunteer experiences for its membership. Organizations that seek recognition for this award are encouraged to use BlazerPulse to track/document members' hours. All volunteer service, both in-person and virtual, will be considered for this award.


    Campus Impact Award

    Recognizes a student organization that has developed and implemented an outstanding (virtual, hybrid, or in-person) event, community service project, or social media campaign. The initiative must have significantly contributed to the quality of life at UAB and/or the student experience. Events that did not follow the UAB United guidelines and health promoting behaviors will not be considered.


    Outstanding New Organization

    Recognizes an organization new to the campus since April 1. The organization demonstrates a progression of growth, improvement and achievement throughout the year as indicated by their programming and membership.


    Outstanding Undergraduate Student Organization

    Recognizes a group of students or a student organization for its success and support of student development, leadership, and campus/community involvement. This organization has been a shining example to other organizations throughout the year, based on all aspects of organization responsibility, including, but not limited to, quality of programming, active participation of membership, successful recruiting and organization management.


    Outstanding Commitment to Advocacy

    Recognizes a student organization that has successfully supported a particular community issue or cause impacting the marginalized. The organization should have made the issue/cause an integral part of their organization’s mission.


    Outstanding Graduate Student Organization

    Recognizes a UAB Graduate Student Organization for its success and support of student development, leadership, and campus/community involvement. This organization has been a shining example to other organizations throughout the year, based on all aspects of organization responsibility, including, but not limited to, quality of programming, active participation of membership, successful recruiting and organization management.


    The Creed Award

    Recognizes a student organization that embodies UAB’s values of honor, integrity, diversity, innovation, and/or service, as outlined in The Blazer Way. Nominations will be evaluated on the organizations' contributions to 2 or more of the above-mentioned tenets. The successful award winner demonstrates alignment with The Blazer Way through all organizational activities.

  • Student Organization Advisor of the Year

    Recognizes a full-time UAB faculty or staff advisor who has dedicated time and energy by making extraordinary contributions to the student organization which they advises.


    Supervisor of the Year

    Recognizes a full-time UAB faculty or staff member that serves in a direct supervisory role to paid, hourly UAB student employee(s). This individual has dedicated time and energy to training, supporting, and developing UAB students through their on-campus employment experience.
