UAB, Children’s of Alabama working to advance pediatric research

New federal legislation has established the framework for a research network to study rare pediatric diseases, an idea UAB and Children's of Alabama have long championed. UAB Professor of Pediatrics David Kimberlin, M.D., who also is president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, will represent Alabama on the implementation workgroup to coordinate with the NIH. UAB and Children’s will apply to become a primary site in the new network.

Adolescent Mentoring Program is seeking volunteers

The UAB Adolescent Mentoring Program is seeking volunteer mentors, ages 21 and older, to provide positive, one-on-one experiences for moderate- to high-risk youthful offenders. Matched mentors will receive a monthly $50 stipend and will be reimbursed for eligible expenses. To learn more, contact Travaé Hardaway at hardawayt@jccal.org or 264-8161.

Breastfeeding support group to meet in new location

The Nurturing Mothers Breastfeeding Support group will now meet 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the 3rd Presbyterian Church, 617 22nd St. S. Free parking is available and the group is open to all women — UAB staff, employees and women in the community — interested in breastfeeding. Check out the Facebook website for more info.
