UAB Collat School of Business students recently honored four professors with the inaugural CSOB Teaching Excellence Awards. The new teaching awards honor one professor in each academic department and in the graduate program and are voted on by Collat students.

"Students have an opportunity to recognize the professors they believe have had the most impact on their learning," said Dean Eric Jack. "The students are voting for the faculty who make a difference day to day in the classroom and who are inspiring our next generation of business leaders."

The award recipients were honored at the school's 50th Anniversary reception celebration in April. Each receives a $1,500 cash award.

"This will become an annual award," said Collat instructor Rush Neil, who helped organize the awards. "We'll recognize those the students deem to be providing excellence in teaching at Collat. This is the voice of the students."

Marena Messina opens a new website

Accounting and Finance Department

Messina is a visiting professor who serves as the co-advisor of both Beta Alpha Psi and the Janet Herring Mentoring Program. Messina is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting at Kennesaw State University. She is also a UAB and University of Alabama alumna. She teaches AC 200 (Principles of Accounting), AC 402 (Income Taxation I) and AC 452 (Income Taxation II).

Parker Woodroof, Ph.D. opens a new website

Marketing, Industrial Distribution & Economics Department

Dr. Woodroof is an assistant professor of marketing whose research areas include digital marking, the marketing-finance interface and cause-related marketing. He joined the faculty in 2021. His research has appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science and other notable journals. He teaches MK 401 (Social Media in Marketing).

Patrick Murphy, Ph.D. opens a new website

Management, Information Systems & Quantitative Methods Department

Dr. Murphy is the Goodrich Chair of Entrepreneurship and the director of the school's entrepreneurship program. He also serves as the Professor in Residence at Birmingham's Innovation Depot. His work has been published in several journals, and he is author of the book, "Mutiny and Its Bounty." He will be teaching ENT 270 (The Entrepreneurial Mindset) this fall.

Chris Edmonds, Ph.D. opens a new website

Graduate School of Management

Dr. Edmonds is an associate professor in the Accounting and Finance Department. He teaches a business decision-making approach to his in-person and online accounting classes. He has received teaching awards from both UAB and Virginia Tech and has authored several accounting books. In the graduate program, he teaches MBA 601 (Accounting/Finance for Managers) and MBA 608 (Cost Analysis and Decision Making).
