UAB Department Chair Paul Di Gangi

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business has named information systems professor Paul M. Di Gangi, Ph.D. opens a new website , chair of the Department of Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods.

“Dr. Di Gangi is an exceptional scholar and teacher who has been instrumental in building our online graduate degree in management information systems, which is ranked #4 in the country by U.S. New & World Report,” said Christopher Shook, Ph.D., dean of the Collat School of Business. “We are delighted that he will now help us elevate our management, HR and entrepreneurship programs to new heights.”

Di Gangi joined UAB in 2013 from Loyola University Maryland, where he served as assistant professor in the Sellinger School of Business and Management. In 2017 he was named program director for Collat’s MS MIS program opens a new website , leading the creation of three graduate certificates in cybersecurity management, business analytics, and IT management. He also became steward of the school’s Dora and Sanjay Singh Endowed Fund for Information Systems Research in 2017. Di Gangi currently chairs a task force looking to overhaul the school’s MBA curriculum.

A prolific researcher, Di Gangi’s research has been published, or is forthcoming, in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Information & Organization, International Journal of Information Management, Internet Research, and MIS Quarterly Executive, among others. He currently serves as a senior editor for MIS Quarterly Executive and an associate editor for both the European Journal of Information Systems and Information & Management. Most recently, he was editor for a MIS Quarterly Executive special issue on digital transformation during times of crisis.

He received the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2017, and the MS MIS Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in 2018. He has taught a range of courses in the areas of cybersecurity, social media, project management, and information systems. Most recently Di Gangi was recognized for innovations in his Introduction to Cybersecurity course, which incorporates generative AI models into lessons about qualitative risk analysis to demonstrate the perils of trusting AI over human judgment.

Di Gangi earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Quinnipiac College, and a master’s degree in information systems technology from George Washington University. He earned his Ph.D. in business administration from Florida State University in 2010. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) based on his work relating to policy, strategic planning, and risk analysis.
