One of the founding members of the Board of Visitors in 1992, Anita Smith has had a front-row seat for the health care revolution that has taken place in Birmingham and around the state over the past five decades.

Effective December 4, 2014 at the winter meeting of the Board of Visitors (BOV), Barbara O’Neal Eddleman becomes the BOV’s 10th Chair. Joining her in leading the Board in the Co-Chair role is Dr. Douglas C. “Doug” Tilt, a BOV member since 2007.

Since its founding almost 23 years ago, the Board of Visitors has had outstanding leadership. The following profiles honor those dedicated individuals who have wisely led the Board thus far on its journey of supporting the UAB School of Nursing.

For 27 years, Rita Ingalls Spencer knew the fulfillment of taking care of children and adolescents at the Birmingham-based children’s medical center now known as Children’s of Alabama.

The 2014 No-Show Ball fundraiser hosted by the Junior Board of Visitors (JBOV) was a success, exceeding the goal set by JBOV members.

For 34 years, Jack W. Trigg, Jr., MD, practiced internal medicine in the Birmingham area. He was a member of a group practice that long was called Southside Internists and then, following a merger with another group Southview Medical Group.

Two UAB School of Nursing faculty members have been selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as 2014 Scholars and Fellows. C. Ann Gakumo, PhD, RN, has been named an RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar and Joy P. Deupree, PhD, MSN, APRN-BC, has been named an RWJF Executive Nurse Fellow.
Her ultimate goal is to reduce practice barriers for nurse practitioners
