The UAB Medicine core logo is central to the brand, and we lead with this logo in almost all scenarios. However, there are select instances where units and clinical offerings may use a lockup. Lockups should only be used when they add value to the communication piece or provide clarification to an audience.
Lockup Configurations
Lockups may appear in three different configurations. They may also appear in full color, black, or white color variations.

Lockup Guidelines
- Lockups are created for academic departments, centers, institutes, campuses, locations, and strategic growth areas.
- Only lockups created and provided by UAB Medicine are official and approved. Do not attempt to create your own lockup or modify existing lockups in any way.
- For conciseness, department lockups do not include “Department of”. Continue using your full department name in other formal communications. “Department of” or “Division of” should not be used in patient communications.
- Units that consist of a single word (i.e. Surgery) are only provided a primary lockup configuration. A secondary lockup configuration is not available for these units. However, units may request a center-stacked merchandise lockup for instances when the imprint area on merchandise and apparel does not accommodate the unit’s primary lockup.
Usage Guidelines
When to consider using lockups: apparel, branded merchandise, sponsorship and partnership materials, and select print/stationery items (notecards and notepads)
When not to use lockups (use core medicine logo instead): digital screens, email headers, social media posts, social media profile images, digital ads, PowerPoint presentations, publications, reports, marketing materials, patient guides, formal stationery, retractable banners, step and repeat banners, tents, tablecloths, and video intro/outro cards
Note: Lockups should only be used on apparel and branded merchandise when two imprint areas are not available or the cost for two imprint areas is not feasible for your unit.
Merchandise Lockups
Merchandise lockups are available for select units that do not qualify for a standard logo lockup. Units that qualify for a merchandise lockup include academic divisions, academic sections, and educational programs, such as the Medical Scientist Training Program. Merchandise lockups should only be used on merchandise and apparel.
A center-stacked version of the merchandise lockup is available for instances when the imprint area size on merchandise or apparel does not accommodate the unit’s primary lockup configuration or when the item does not have a sufficient secondary imprint location. Request a merchandise lockup.

Heersink School of Medicine Lockup
The Heersink School of Medicine lockup should be used when the communication is primarily focused on the school. This includes audiences such as medical students, alumni, and donors. The logo may also be used for marketing and promotion of the school, events hosted by the school (such as White Coat Ceremony or commencement), or in sponsorship scenarios. This lockup is only available in the primary configuration; however, in certain applications like branded merchandise, it may be separated into two parts—UAB Medicine logo and the Heersink School of Medicine wordmark. The “Heersink School of Medicine” wordmark may be left-aligned or center-aligned when separated from the UAB Medicine logo. The Heersink School of Medicine lockup should never be paired with department, division, or unit names.

Unit Identification
For units that do not qualify for a lockup, there are several other methods of properly representing your unit in a brand-aligned way.
Two-Imprint Locations
Use a core logo or lockup in one imprint location and your unit name in Aktiv Grotesk font (title case) in a secondary location.
Parent Lockup
Units such as divisions and sections should use their parent department lockup to represent their unit. Additionally, these units may also identify the unit name in Aktiv Grotesk font (title case) in a secondary location.
